Thinking Routine: KWL

We are going to start a new project which is going to take us around two weeks of our Science lessons, to start with it we will do the following thinking routine using the following video to know the starting point of all of you, the route you want to take and when we finished the project we will assess what you have learnt.

The routine it is called KWL (download in editable odt formatdownload in pdf).

  • K: What did you KNOW about Plants? You will think on all your learning about this topic so we will know where we have to start our learning adventure.
  • W: What do you WANT to learn about Plants? We offer to you a learning adventure about this topic but we can include some aspects if you consider interesting to learn about and we have not covered them.
  • L: What have you LEARNT about Plants? You will do this part of the thinking routine at the end of the project to assess all your learning about it.

When you finish writing the thinking routine ideas in your graphic organizer you can write the main ones in some pieces of paper and they will be sticked into a the big display in the class so it will be shown during all the project and we can add more new ideas along the project.

Thinking about my learning.

One of the most important thing in our learning processes is to reflex about it to improve as much as you can. For that purpose you can create a Learning Diary in which you are going to reflect about how everything is going along this project.

For the learning you can choose different options:

  • Create a shared document with your teacher.
  • Use any tool like padlet to show your progress.
  • Use a notebook in which you can write.

Everyday at the end of each lesson you will write on your Learning Diary answering the following questions:

  • Date.
  • What have I done?
  • What problems did I have? How did I solve these problems?
  • What have I learnt?
  • How can I improve my learning for the next lesson?
  • Do I want to learn a bit more about something?

Your teacher will check it and give to you some feedback to help your improvements.
