Titanic Quarter

Where the myth began!

Discovering Belfast, you get to a place which has to be familiar to you because you will know the history of the most famous ship in the world, the Titanic. Titanic Belfast is an attraction and a monument to Belfast's maritime heritage on the place where the Titanic was built. The visitor can learn a lot about the stories of the sunk Titanic, which hit an iceberg and sank during her maiden voyage in 1912, and her sister ships RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic.

Construction _ Titanic Belfast

At the end of the session, you will have:

  • known a little bit more about the Titanic ship.
  • revised how to use and practised the past simple tense.
  • started your collaborative Google Site in groups about the city of Belfast.

At this attraction, you can visit the exact place where the Titanic was built. The ships were constructed by the Belfast shipbuilders Harland and Wolff, who had a long-established relationship with the White Star Line dating back to 1867. 

Harland and Wolff were given a great deal of latitude in designing ships for the White Star Line; the usual approach was for the latter to sketch out a general concept which the former would take away and turn into a ship design.

Did you watch Titanic yesterday evening?

The Titanic sank in 1912. A long time ago! When we want to express actions and facts that are completely finished, we use the past simple in English.

Past simple

If you need to revise this verbal tense, go to the following link: Past Simple (Exercise 1, Exercise 2, Exercise 3). 

Now you can use this verbal tense to explain what you saw in the Belfast Titanic exhibition and you can tell what surprised you the most. Or if you prefer you can imagine the last hours of the ship and write a short text about it. 

Write it in your personal learning diary and use the 'Rubric to assess a blog post'.

Once you have published your text, your classmates have to cooperate with you in order to check your text and give you some feedback, suggestions and corrections using the option of adding a comment in your blog post. You must, of course, do the same with some of your classmates' posts.

Challenge: English-speaking cities

Challenge Step 1: Open up a new Google Site and share it with your group

The challenge in this project is a Google site about English-speaking cities. In this challenge, we are going to work in groups of 2/3 people. The first step is to create the site using google sites. 

The rubric to evaluate a google map will be used to evaluate your work. Remember that you have to evaluate it once you have finished creating the route with the ten stops of each city. 

You can have extra help watching the following video about registering and using Google Sites. One of the members of the groups is going to be the leader and is going to open up the site and share it with the rest of the members of the group. Thus, the other members will be able to edit the site as well.

  • After having created the site, check that the whole group can edit it and start designing a landing page with the title English -Speaking Cities.
  • In this first page, you have to describe what your group is going to create collaboratively: a website with information about 10 of the most important English - speaking cities in the world, one city per project. In this project, we are going to work with Belfast.
  • If you have created the google site previously, using another project from this series, you only have to add a new page to your Google site.
  • As you have to work in groups of 2/3 people, you can also use the website Linoit.com to brainstorm your ideas, collect your links and reach an agreement on which digital materials you are going to use at your Google Site for Belfast even though you are working at different locations.

It is now time to start working collaboratively with your group. Remember to always follow the steps. That way it will be easier for you to produce the final product of the challenge. Your teacher can always help you with your doubts.
