Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the Walk of Fame

Let's go to the Oscar's ceremony

Grauman's Chinese Theatre first opened in 1927. It still hosts premiere movies as well as classic Hollywood films for only 25 cents a ticket. You can also take a scheduled tour that runs several times a day. In front of the theatre, you will find the handprints and footprints of famous stars from every era of Hollywood.

These prints are often confused with the Walk of Fame, which has bronze stars commemorating some celebrities and which passes by the theatre along Hollywood Boulevard.

Have you ever seen this Hollywood Walk of fame on TV? Do you remember any Hollywood actor or actress who has got a star at this place?

At the end of the session, you will have:

  • learnt a lot of details about Grauman's Chinese Theatre.
  • learnt when to use the infinitive and when to use the gerund.
  • started your collaborative Google Site in groups about the city of Los Angeles and started your blog-portfolio.

Continue with your posts on Twitter (#taskwayoflife and #EDIAlosangeles). Discover the Walk of Fame and choose which is your favourite actor or actress. Then, send a tweet with the link with the information about him/her (e.g. Bruce Willis) and explain the reason why you like him/her. The 'Rubric to assess a Tweet' can help you do a good job in this social network.

The Grauman's Chinese Theatre used to host the Oscar Academy Awards, but it now takes place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Have you ever watched the Oscar Academy ceremony in the past? Do you remember any film with a lot of Oscar awards? If you need more info about the Oscars, you can watch all the videos they have uploaded in their youtube channel.

Remember that Grauman's Chinese Theatre must be part of the route on your Google Sites map.

I would like to visit Los Angeles

For sure, you would like to visit Los Angeles in the future. Or do you prefer visiting any other city in the United States first?

As you can see in the previous sentences there are some verbs that are followed by an infinitive (to + base form of the verb) and some others that are followed by a gerund (-ing form of the base form of the verb).

But, when do you have to use the infinitive? And when the gerund? Can we use both? Read this information about this topic and do some exercises to know exactly when to use one or the other.

Challenge: English-speaking cities

Challenge Step 1: Open up a new Google Site and share it with your group

The challenge in this project is a Google site about English-speaking cities. In this challenge, we are going to work in groups of 2/3 people. The first step is to create the site using Google sites.

The rubric to evaluate a google map will be used to evaluate your work. Remember that you have to evaluate it once you have finished creating the route with the ten stops of each city.

You can have extra help watching the video about registering and using Google Sites.

  • After having created the site, check that the whole group can edit it and start designing a landing page with the title English -Speaking Cities.
  • In this first page, you have to describe what your group is going to create collaboratively: a website with information about 10 of the most important English - speaking cities in the world, one city per project. In this project, we are going to work with the city of Los Angeles.
  • If you have created the google site previously, using another project from this series, you only have to add a new page to your Google site.
  • As you have to work in groups of 2/3 people, you can also use the website linoit to brainstorm your ideas, collect your links and reach an agreement on which digital materials you are going to use at your Google Site for Los Angeles even though you are working at different places.

It is now time to start working collaboratively with your group. Remember to always follow all the steps. That way, it will be easier for you to compose the final product of the challenge. Your teacher can always help you with your doubts.

Learning Diary

Learning Diary. Step 1: Start your blog-portfolio and use it to reflect on your progress.

One of activities you have to do is a "Learning Diary". You can do it by opening a blog where you can explain in your first post different aspects of your research such as:

  • How you have divided the different tasks and the research you have done.
  • All the steps you have followed in your investigation.
  • The links you have visited in your challenge.

If you have already opened up a blog in another project, just add these reflections in another page. Remember that creativity is going to be really important in developing the project.

This is a perfect moment for you to check your work. Press the button and answer the questions in your blog.
