Title: Climate Detectives: European Species Under Pressure.

Key Stage: Secondary Education.

Year Group: Key Stage 4 / Upper Secondary.

Subject: Biology and Geology.

Description and purpose of learning

In this eTwinning educational kit, pupils will work collaboratively to investigate how climate change is affecting biodiversity across different European ecosystems. By observing their local environment, collecting data, analysing evidence and comparing findings with partner schools, pupils will understand that phenomena such as drought, habitat loss, invasive species and shifts in wildlife cycles are not distant issues, but realities present in their own regions.

The aim of the learning activities is to foster a scientific, critical and committed perspective regarding current environmental challenges. The project will enable pupils to apply the scientific method, use digital tools responsibly, communicate in English with European peers, and create collaborative products that help raise awareness within the educational community about the need to protect biodiversity and act sustainably.

Timeline and objectives

This learning unit is designed to last approximately six sessions.

The objectives of this learning unit are:

  • To observe the local natural environment to detect signs of climate change.
  • To understand how climate change affects biodiversity and species in different European ecosystems.
  • To compare the environmental situation of different countries using data, images and observations.
  • To work cooperatively with pupils from other European schools.
  • To use digital tools to share information, communicate and create shared outputs.
  • To improve communication in English within a real-world context of international collaboration.
  • To foster environmental awareness and pupils' responsibility towards protecting nature.
  • To disseminate the project results to raise awareness within the educational community.
