CN Tower

Welcome to Toronto!

Let’s start learning some more details about the city that we are going to visit in this project. Our first stop in Toronto is going to be CN Tower. Toronto's most famous landmark, the 553-meter CN Tower, is one of the city's must see attractions and it is also impossible to be missed because the structure can be seen from almost everywhere in the city.

Tourists can either appreciate the building from the ground or take a trip up to one of the observation areas or restaurants for wonderful views of the city and Lake Ontario. The CN Tower, which was built between the years 1972 and 1976, was once the tallest structure in the whole world.

At the end of the session, you will have:

  • been introduced to Toronto, the largest city in Canada.  
  • known all the outcomes you have to produce in this project.
  • started thinking about which things you are going to include in your recommendations to travel to a Canadian city.

If you need extra help, you can turn on subtitles. Which place would you like to visit first? Which one has impressed you the most? Did you know anything about the CN Tower before?

After having watched the video, try to answer the following questions orally:

  • Do you know any other famous places in Toronto? 
  • Have you ever been to Toronto? And to any other Canadian cities? Do you know of anybody who has visited this city or any other Canadian cities?
  • Would you like to visit this city in the future? Why? Why not?

As you can see, Will shows us some of the very interesting places to visit and things to do in those places and it is a good way to get acquainted with the city we are going to work on this project. What aspect has been more surprising to you? Is there anything that you already knew? Have you chosen your favourite place in Toronto yet? or the place you want to know more about?

You can answer and summarize these three questions in a short monologue and you can share it with your classmate or with the rest of the class.

As you are going to see in a few moments, The CN Tower will be the first place you should include on a Google Sites map route. Don't forget about it!

Meanwhile, visit its official website and explore all the things you can visit in one of the tallest towers in the world.

Outcomes to produce while in Toronto.

At the end of this project, you will have produced the following outcomes:

Task: Each project has a completely different task, with different steps in order to complete it. In Toronto, you will have to produce individually, a quick guide for young people who would like to visit some other Canadian cities but are trying to spend a little money. Thus, you will have to give the pieces of advice and recommendations to travel to another Canadian city and explain how to get there, where to stay or what to visit and try not to spend much money.

On this occasion, you will design and publish these recommendations with the help of an app called Finally, you will have to present it in your classroom and you will also have to disseminate it through Twitter. All the steps within this task will be identified thanks to their colour, orange.

Challenge: Along the different projects, there is a challenge which is common to all the projects, with a Google Site, where you have to search for certain information of the different English-speaking cities you are going to visit. The different activities are also going to be distributed in different steps and you are going to have some help to look for and select the information for the collaborative challenge. This is designed to be done in groups of 2/3 students. All the activities within this challenge will be identified thanks to their colour, green. The 'Rubric for assessing the design of a digital sitewill be used to evaluate your site.

Learning Diary: You have to use a blog (wordpress, blogger, edublogs or others), as your learning diary. You will publish the different reflections on the activities you will find throughout the project, the videos of the conversations with your classmates, the reflections on the daily work, all the different tasks, the link to your Google Site challenge, and all the other activities that you will discover throughout these projects. All the activities within this task will be identified by their colour, blueThese activities will be evaluated according to the 'Rubric to assess blog posts'.

Your task: A guide about Canadian cities

Task Step 1: Think about and choose what you have to design.

At the end of this project, you will have been able to design and publish a digital presentation with a quick guide for young people who would like to visit another Canadian city in a very cheap way.

Then, using the tool, you will have to publish and you will have to explain orally your research and your pieces of advice and recommendations to the rest of your classmates 

By doing so, you will be awarded an accomplishment badge by your teacher who will be able to create them with this website and that you will be able to upload to your personal Learning Diary.

First you have to choose the city you are going to do some research about. In order to choose and present as many Canadian cities as possible, try to choose one city each. Thus, at the end of the project, the whole class will have a complete guide to Canadian cities with recommendations to travel in a cheap way. In order to choose the cities, visit this page and organize which city each of you is going to work with to avoid repetitions.

Then, you have to think about what to include in your digital presentation and brainstorm some answers to these questions:

  • Which aspects am I going to include in my digital presentation? How can I travel to Canada? How can I go from the airport to the city with a cheap ticket? Which means of transport can I use in that city? Where can I eat without it being an expensive restaurant?  What kind of cheap or free activities can I do in Canada? 
  • Which currency do they use in Canada? How much money should I take with me to stay a week? Where can I stay? Can I stay in a youth hostel? And with a family?
  • What about the weather in that city? What clothes do I have to pack in my suitcase? Are they different in summer and in winter? Feel free to add as many other issues that you consider interesting for your research in this project.
