Ulster Museum

Visit to Ulster museum

The Ulster Museum is located inside the Botanic Gardens in Belfast, and it has a huge extension for public use. It contains materials from the collections of fine art and applied art, archaeology, ethnography, treasures from the Spanish Armada, local history, numismatics, industrial archaeology, botany, zoology and geology.

It is the largest museum in Northern Ireland, and one of the components of National Museums of Northern Ireland.

At the end of the session, you will have:

How often do you go shopping?

Listen carefully as several people share their thoughts about shopping and what they like shopping for. After listening, do the vocabulary focus and comprehension questions. You can do the activities in the following link: How often do you go shopping?

After having done the listening activities, you have to answer the following questions orally and record your questions and answers in pairs in order to upload the result to your learning diary after having answered them:

  • Do you like shopping? Do you usually go to a shopping centre?
  • Or do you only visit them when there are sales? Have you ever found a bargain in a shop?
  • Do teenagers and young people spend too much time in shopping centres? Which kind of shops do they usually visit?
  • Do you think that teenagers can have an alternative option instead of going to shopping centres? Which ones? 

Record your questions and answers in pairs and produce a video clip with your conversation. You can use the web WeVideo to record them. Your teacher can help you in all this process. After having recorded them, you have to play them in the classroom and your classmates have to assess them using the 'Rubric to assess a video assignment in the classroom'.

Task Step 2: Starting with the research for the interview 

As the task for this project is to design a dialogue/interview about "the last time you went to a shopping centre”, it will be necessary to start looking for the information that you will include in your dialogue:

The following points could be very helpful for you to look for the right information:

  • Read about how to write and improve your dialogue.
  • Now, you have to look for some interesting links where you can find information about this topic: kinds of shops that you can come across in a shopping centre, things and objects you can buy inside, etc. Your teacher can help you select the most interesting ones.
  • You have to share what you have found with the rest of the class through different means. For example, you can use a Twitter hashtag,(#taskinterview or #EDIAbelfast could be some options).
  • You can organize the brainstorm ideas about “your last visit to a shopping centre” and start designing the interview that you are going to prepare to talk about what you did, what you bought and where you went. You can also use the list of vocabulary you have done on "Waterfront Hall".

You can take a look at more words related to grocery shopping in English in order to have more ideas and vocabulary for your interview.
