LET’S TALK!  Discuss the following questions with your classmates:

  • Can a child become an entrepreneur?
  • Do you know anybody who started a business project at an early age?
  • Do you need to have special qualities or skills?
  • What do you think are the most important aspects to consider when setting up your own business?

If you are not able to answer some of the former questions, watch this video and try to find some of the answers.

Now, it is time to practice the new vocabulary you have learnt. Watch Business English: Entrepreneurship and answer the questions it poses.

After that, you will read the article 10 Successful Young Entrepreneurs from an online business magazine about the latest generation of entrepreneurs from the U.S., India, and the U.K. They range in age from 10 to 25 and all of them wanted to leave their mark on the world. Choose the one you like the most and try to answer some of the questions below:

  • How old were they when they started?
  • What type of business did they start?
  • How did they start and why?
  • Did they get any help?

Finally, work in groups with those partners who have chosen the same teen and share your findings about this person. Summarize the most important information and share it with the class.

Giving advice in English

Giving advice in English might seem tricky at first. There are several ways to do it and each uses a slightly sentence structure. So, how do we choose which one to use? Find out with these five simple ways to give advice in English. Watch the video How to give Advice in English. Do you know the meaning of the verbs and expressions mentioned in it?

TedExplainsEnglish. Learn how to Give Advice in English - Useful Vocabulary and Phrases (Licencia estándar de YouTube)

After watching the video, design an infographic to reflect on the modal verbs and other expressions used to give advice in English and compare them with your own language. Then, practice with these Liveworksheet activities.

Tips for young entrepreneurs

With this mission, you will practice your mediation skills. It may be a new skill for you. If you still do not know about it. Click on the link to a Youtube video  where it is explained how this skill works.  We will start watching a video in which some recommendations for young entrepreneurs are given. Click on start to watch and answer the questions.

Which of the recommendations given do you think are most useful? Watch the video again and make a list of the tips given.

Your task

Now that you have created your business plan and your company profile for your social media site, how about sharing your experience with other teens?  In this mission, you will have to record a short video which you will upload in your Instagram profile giving some tips for other teens who would like to become entrepreneurs. The group of Erasmus exchange students visiting your school loved your idea and are also interested in setting up a small business in their town and help their local communities.  You have found  a very useful infographic on the World Economic Forum site.  With your group, read the information and decide which the most relevant tips are  which you can use in your video. Then, record your video and upload it to Instagram.

Assessment

To evaluate your task, take a look at the "Rubric to assess oral mediation" that your teacher will use when assessing your production (Download editable file/Download pdf file). This will help you know how to do a great job!

Mediation strategies

These tips will help you mediate.

  • Use your own words
  • Paraphrase, do not translate literally
  • Connect ideas
  • Report the information objectively
  • Summarise

Learning diary

It's time to continue with your portfolio. Remember it helps you reflect on what you are learning and, most important, what the best way for learning is.

You will create a new section entitled "Young entrepreneurs hacks”. You will update it with your work and reflect on your learning using the following questions:

  • What did I do?
  • When did I do it?
  • How did I work, individually, in pairs or in groups?
  • How did I feel working in that way?
  • How well/badly did it go?
  • What did I learn with this task?
  • How will I use it in the future?
  • What do I have to improve?
  • What strategies will I use in the future to improve it?

Remember to update the glossary and grammar section with the new words and grammar structures you have learnt.

The "Rubric to assess a portfolio" (note) will help you design your learning diary (Download editable file/Download pdf file).

Do not forget it would be great if you shared these feelings and thoughts with your classmates. You will have 10 or 15 minutes to complete this part.

If you are working on a printed portfolio, the aspect "USE OF DIGITAL TOOL" does not apply.
