Didactic Guidelines

‘A trip from the cell to the body’ is a didactic proposal to work on the curriculum of the subject of Natural Sciences in the 5th year of Primary Education.

As usual in these proposals, in this OER we propose challenges that are motivating for students and that involve, as far as possible, an autonomous learning process in which the students discovers information, investigates, organises and generates a portfolio with evidence of their work, research and learning throughout this series of resources.

Throughout the resource, small challenges are proposed in which the students apply the contents offered. In each of the different steps of this OER, a small amount of information is offered and a challenge is proposed in which to investigate, develop this content in depth and, therefore, learn about it. The challenges are assessable in each of the sections and will lead to a final production.

This didactic proposal responds to a ‘granular structure’. Granularity refers to the fact that the structure of this OER depends on the learning objectives, but the nature and organisation of the contents that make it up can vary significantly. In addition, there are themes that are common to different areas of knowledge, which means that part of the contents that make up this OER can be taken up and integrated into a different subject. Therefore, different challenges are proposed that can be combined and reused in different subjects and thus optimise the OER and this has a direct impact on its didactic reusability. This granularity of the challenges, without losing sight of the unity of the OER, makes it easier for teachers to use them.

For the teacher, each of these challenges can be considered as a competency-based learning situation. Its aim is to offer ideas so that teachers can use them directly in their classes or adapt them to their didactic programming. However, the proposed structure can in itself constitute a didactic itinerary and a learning project, as it covers all the basic knowledge of the subject and has a final product that globalises it.

Finally, it should be noticed that these challenges can have connections with other STEAM subjects, such as mathematics, technology or art, for their possible inclusion in an interdisciplinary itinerary. In all these areas there are many concepts where it is possible to transfer knowledge.

Itinerary

Stages

Goals

Sessions

Breaking the ice The aim of this task is to get the students to know the itinerary they are about to start. Through a thinking routine, we achieve two objectives, one is to situate the student, and the other is an initial assessment that helps us to find out the previous knowledge and redesign the itinerary if necessary. 1 session
The cell Learning about the concept of the cell is not always easy, so we propose learning through the creation of a model of both animal and plant cells. 2 sessions
Organization of living things This task introduces the basic concepts in the organisation of the human being from the cell to the body. The student will make use of Visual Thinking to develop a mind map. 2 sessions
The systems in our body At the end of the itinerary, the student will approach the most complex part of the human body, the systems. They will approach them through the creation of a comic strip. They will continue by making a presentation about their system. And finally they will become active agents of the evaluation, creating the questions of a written test about their system. 4 sessions

Assessment

Due to the structure of this OER, made up of challenges and activities that can be carried out as a whole or separately, specific assessment proposals are offered for each one. The teacher will find rubrics for these activities, but there is also room for other assessment tests, the portfolio of each student, and other work or productions that can be carried out during the didactic sequence.

The implementation of Project Based Learning must also incorporate metacognitive elements in its assessment that allow students to reflect on the learning achieved during the process. In this sense, the strategies for self-regulating learning such as the learning diaries at the end of each challenge or task or the different thinking routines help students to become aware of their achievements and difficulties.

The assessment proposal complies with all the curricular assessment criteria. At the end of each task, reflection questions are always included, in the form of a learning diary, and assessment rubrics for the tasks, which can be used indistinctly for:
  • Students' self-assessment
  • Co-assessment between pairs or groups of learners
  • Teacher assessments

It is worth remembering that, throughout any teaching sequence (in this case, either in part or in its entirety), a formative evaluation will be carried out, the purpose of which is to improve the process. It is an evaluation of processes (general functioning, teaching, learning), which implies the need to have continuous data on the development of this process, so that immediate decisions can be taken to provide effective feedback and make sure that progress is made towards the achievement of the expected competences.

Formative assessment requires continuity, reflection and permanent assessment of educational events in order to adjust them as they occur, without waiting for future times when the only solution offered to students is to ‘catch up’.
